Material Status related business scenario in SAP MM

Material Status: There are two primary levels where you can define this status:

Cross-Plant Material Status: Restricts the material across the entire client (all plants). This is maintained in the Basic Data 1 view.

Plant-Specific Material Status: Restricts the material only within a specific plant. This is maintained in the MRP 1 or Costing 1 views.

How it Controls Functions

The status itself is a 2-digit code (e.g., 01 for Under Development, 02 for Obsolete). Each code is linked to a table that defines whether a specific business activity results in:

  1. No Message: The transaction proceeds normally.
  2. Warning: The user is alerted, but can still post the transaction.
  3. Error Message: The transaction is blocked entirely.

Configuration & Maintenance

To see the full details of what a specific status blocks, you can check the configuration in the backend (IMG):

Path: Logistics - General > Material Master > Settings for Key Fields > Define Material Statuses

You will get the below screen once you go to the above configuration node.

Select the required Material Status and click on Details to get the below screen.

In this area, you can see a grid of checkboxes. If a checkbox is marked for “Inventory management” with an “Error” type-B, no goods movement can be posted for any material assigned that status.

You updated the Material status to block the Inventory movements for a Material and gave the valid from as 10.06.2025.

Document Date as 10.06.2025 and Posting Date also 10.06.2025 but the entry date is 04.06.2025. In this case, the system won’t throw away any error.

As per this testing, the valid from date is checking the entry date of the transaction but not the Document date or Posting Date. I hope it helps to understand the concept.
